Purrfect Ombre Cat Scratch Post DIY

It’s no secret here on the blog that I love my cats. If you’ve followed us for any length of time, you know that Tiger, and occasionally Friendly, make their appearances on our social media & posts, especially on Snapchat. He’s a Snapchat star, I’m tellin ya. Well because I love my cats so much, and want them to be the healthiest and happiest they can be, I wanted to make them this special ombre cat scratch post to keep them entertained when I’m not at home. Tiger especially love scratching his claws on things ( which can be a bit of a problem when he’s indoors) so this will be a great thing to save some of my furniture from his tiny dagger claws.

Another way I keep my kitties healthy & happy is by making sure they have quality cat food. I’ve used the Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® Grain Free Wet Food for Cats several times and my kitties love it a lot.  I love that the Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® Grain Free Wet Food for Cats is all about having real ingredients that are good for your cat. That means it’s all farm raised chicken or salmon, and doesn’t contain any corn, gluten, soy, wheat, filler, artificial preservatives, colors, or flavors. That’s something I look for in my own human food, so why not make sure my cats have the same great quality? They love having tasty, nutritious food, and I love the security of knowing they’re getting cat food that is good for them. I also love the fun flavors that these come in, with super punny names (I’m obviously a huge fan of puns) like Chicken & Shrimp Pawttenesca™, Chicken & Salmon Catterole™, Chicken Purrcata®, Paw Lickin’ Chicken & Liver, Tuna Purrfection™, Ocean Fish & Chicken Catch-iatore. I picked up my Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® Grain Free Wet Food for Cats at my local Walmart, in the cat food isle. Which is really convenient because I live practically next to the store! It’s also available at many other retailers, including Amazon!. If you want to see where you can find some close you, that information is totally available on the Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® website.

The Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® not only makes awesome food for your cats, she loves to give back. In fact, all of the personal proceeds go to Rachael’s Rescue, which donates money to shelters in need. Those funds go towards buying food, medical supplies, and treatments for many animals in need.

Purrfect Ombre Cat Scratch Post DIY

To make your own cat scratch post you’ll need:
14″x 14″ x 1/2″ piece of plywood
Nylon Braided Rope
A piece of pipe or a landscape timber (we used a thick cardboard tube that we found from work instead)
Purple Fabric Dye
Liquid Nails
A cute cat toy with a string

Before you do anything, cut out your wood. I cut a 14″ x 14″ piece out of a sheet of plywood. Then make a hole in the center and cut that out. This will be your topper later on. Then paint all of the wood.

1.) Dye your rope according to instructions on the bottle. To make the ombre effect, I split the rope into 3 sections  (not cut into sections, just separated). Once section I left in the longest to get the darkest purple, the middle I just dipped quickly, and the white was not dipped at all. That way you have the different shades of purple. Once it’s dyed, let it dry.

2.) Use liquid nails to attach your tube to your base. You have about 20 minutes work time with liquid nails before it dries, so no worries.

3.) Make sure to go around the base with liquid nails too, and tuck in the end of your rope there.

4.) Put a decent amount of liquid nails on the tube, and start layering your rope on, starting with the darkest purple end.

5.) Continue the system of glueing and layering, until you get to the top.

6.) Once you get the the top, tuck your end a bit inside the tube and glue. Take your circle of wood and put a bit of liquid nails on the underside and attach your cat toy. Put a layer of liquid nails on the rim.

7.) Place your circle with cat toy attached on top and press down firmly

8.) You’re done! You can add more decorative elements if you wish (I added paw prints) and let dry overnight.
